It’s that time of the year again, your WAEC results have been released, you got over 200 in your JAMB, and Covenant University has just sent you a letter of acceptance, you’re now on your pathway to becoming an undergraduate!.
But then you stop for a minute amidst all the excitement and think of all the horrible things you’ve heard about the school, how are you going to cope with being so far from your parents?, how are you going to make the most of your university experience??.
We’ll worry no more! I’ve got you covered on this one.
Here are my top ten tips/hacks to help you have an amazing first year at Covenant University:
#tip 1: Always make sure to have at least 10 copies the documents that are required of you; try not to skip this tip as you’ll be thanking me after the registration process.
#tip 2: Prepare your mind for a gruesome first few weeks of resumption and try your hardest best to resume on the stated day of resumption as this will facilitate the quick completion of your registration process.
#tip 3: Be sure when shopping, to buy clothes, shoes and accessories that are compliant with the school’s rules and regulations to save yourself from the embarrassment of being “sent back”.
#tip 4: Also make sure you avoid making hairstyles that are not compliant with the school’s rules and regulations to avoid the awkward question of “ahn ahn why did you loosen that your fine hair??”, please do not go overboard in the hairstyle department as simple “braids” will do the trick and last you for a long time!.
#tip 5: Back packs; yeah they’re in fashion and it was totally okay to wear them in secondary school, But!, you’re in university right now and you need to get accustomed with the corporate world !!. A simple shoulder/ hand bag ( for girls) and briefcase / laptop bag ( for boys) will be just fine.
#tip 6: Avoid disrespecting porters or official staff in general; no matter where you’re coming from or the point you’re trying to prove, it’s not worth it!. If possible make sure to keep a stable friendship with your porters/official staff as this will help you in the long run !.
#tip 7: Chapel chapel chapel!!!, I’m sure you’ll find out you’ve never attended church so much in a week all your life, lol. But trust me it’s for the greater good and it would save your a whole lot of stress if you make sure you attend every single one of it.
#tip 8: Take your studies seriously!!!. Honestly this is self explanatory but trust me, if you build a good academic foundation for yourself, you’ll be grateful for it when you enter your second year as things will get tougher.
#tip 9: Make sure to keep your ID card, room key, locker key and any other valuables safely as people tend to steal/ get stolen from in their first year a lot; your ID card being the number one thing on this list as it serves as a major form of your student
Identity on campus !.
#tip 10: Friendship : “ahhh, coming to a new environment, I should make friends with as much people as I can”, wrong move!!, make sure to choose your friends wisely in your first year and avoid having too much friends as it comes with unnecessary drama and could be detrimental to your image in the long run. Remember, ” twenty friends don’t stay together for twenty years” , so make sure to chose people that will add value to your life and not otherwise .
In order to avoid over spending as things could get too pricey in school most times, make sure to buy in bulk from home, especially water as your body may not react well with the sachet water available in the halls of residence.
- Also make sure to call your parents from time to time to check up on them and keep them updated; it makes them know you’re safe and doing well.
- The cafeteria is not like ikeja city mall or palms shopping complex; hence you do not need to spend your whole day “socializing “, watching movies or basicly making it your second hall of residence, lol. Just go in there to buy your food and come back out when you’re done, it’s that simple.
- Try your best to create a time table for your activities on campus to ensure effective time management for best results.
- Search for and ensure to join a service unit in the chapel that truly represents who you are and what you want to do for Christ, this is also a socializing hack !.
Lastly, try as much as possible to get a mentor in school, this could be a lecturer, a hall officer or a high flying student as this makes your stay on campus a lot less confusing. So that’s it! I’ve given you my top ten tips for freshers who have no idea as to how to make the most of their stay at Covenant University. Follow these tips and you’ll have an amazing time at CU. Go Eagles!
