The first episode of Netflix’s original documentary series, Follow This is titled Tech Addict.
As the episode’s title denotes, the episode follows through the reality of a new age concern: Tech addiction.
The informative series reflects through the lens of the top media house, Buzzfeed partnering with Netflix. Charlie Warzel, a Buzzfeed News tech writer, experiments and documents the journey in reStart: a tech addiction recovery program.
Tech addiction sometimes discussed under sub-categories like social media addiction and internet addiction is an increasing fear in the modern world.
In a simple definition, tech addiction is an impulsive control disorder involving the excessive use of technological gadgets, like cell phones, gaming etc.
In a publication by TechAddiction, crazy statistics are quoted resulting from various subcategories of tech addition. But as crazy as the stats quoted, psychologists are still unable to come up with tangible solutions or theories on this new form of addiction.
One would even wonder if the description ‘addiction’ is a proper term in describing this modern challenge as technology also provides breakthrough, useful information, and changes lives positively.
The reStart recovery program offers 45 to 90 days retreat offering a variety of treatment options. Individuals admitted into the center pay a $30, 000 fee and undergo activities to potentially control their addiction.
Warzel’s interview with one of the center’s heads revealed that most patients admitted were males. Some coming in after almost dying from depression, lack of proper diet, lack of personal care and so on.
As much as it seems that African countries like Nigeria take back rows when it comes to the issues of internet addiction, there is no denial of the presence of this modern realistic challenge.
Think of the importance attached to picking up your cellphone first thing in the morning or the difficulty in concentrating on tasks because of tech distractions. These abnormalities are slowly becoming normal and who knows maybe soon basic human traits like communication will have to be taught formally.
At the end of Warzel’s episode for Follow This, he admits that one can not truly completely cut off from technology and expect to be in tune with modern culture. For some professionals, the bulk of their careers rely on the internet to deliver. And deliver they must if they hope to earn and survive.
Warzel insists the best approach in dealing with tech management is finding balance.
And to you reading this: how do you use your technology?
