There’s no denial millennials have been associated with several negative adjectives.
One of such descriptions is that millennials are the most likely to feel entitled in comparison to older generations.
In descibing entitlement, one might simply say, the feeling where a person believes they’re owed something intrinsically. Making the term ‘entitled millennial‘ sound more dramatic.
In as much as millennials might want to deny the entitlement tag, the reality points an accusative finger at them. But millennials are sensible, brilliant and talented. How then did this generation of fast-paced, multitasking generation stain themselves with the ‘entitlement’ tag?
Inc. publication factors parenting as part of a five-sided contributors to this millennial flaw. Parents of this generation brought up millennials to outdo themselves with self-confidence. And while this parenting style is emulable, raising self-aware individuals, entitlement is the cross to bear.
Other factors listed in the publication, include human nature, skill shift, ownership and fast times as other factors causing this behaviour in millennials. An interesting insight into the skill shift factor is that certain skills mastered by certain millennials are debut. Giving these pioneering millennials a high sense of entitlement in professional and personal encounters.
In coming to terms with a conclusion on the matter, Forbes points out the mixed results in this debate. Referencing a study, Forbes is quoted saying:
” According to a study from the University of Hampshire, millennials born between 1988 and 1994 scored 25 percent higher in entitlement-related issues than their 40-60 year old counterparts, and 50 percent higher than those over 60. ”
Having made a brief impression on the millenial tendancy to feel entitled, it might be safe to assume this trait is not intentional. But just like tap faucets, are millennials prepared to turn on and off their entitlement switches when needed? Is there even a necessary situation to pull out the entitlement card? And please while we figure this one out could we all desist from hunting down social groups to blame?
