Times and seasons change. And with this change comes the introduction of new human habits.
In turn, some of these habits become so futile that they transcend mere hobby to becoming a career option.
The internet is an integral part of the modern world. However, it wasn’t until some two decades ago before this networking tool would be taken seriously. Over time, man has sought to make impeccable communication.
From the earliest use of messenger birds, telegraphs, radio, telephones and television, times just show that man’s interest in communication have become heightened as the years pass.
With the introduction of the most popular means of communication, the internet, came the need to socially network. This need would birth social media platforms. Developers would dedicate their skills and time to the creation of social media applications.
In more recent times, the most popular of these platforms are Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat. For years modern man would be content in just relishing the goodness of these platforms. Networking and socializing.
As time evolved, the hobby of texting, entertaining fellow social media users, would for some, become a career option.
This great evolution in social media influence and content creation is so successful that these skill sets are formally and informally learnt and taught.
Throwing it back to the times of Nigerian ancestors, you can imagine how bizarre they’d find some modern skill sets.
Digital Content Creation
If you go through any social media feed, there’s a high chance you’d come across at least one user bearing content creator. Content creation is arguably, the most popular skill in Nigeria in 2018. So vast is this skill that it covers all major forms of media.
Covering a wide range of interests and specialities, content creation is a hot skill in the labour market at the moment. This skill, especially when well implemented, will have employers fighting over a candidate.
Understanding the concept of content creation might be tricky to a Nigerian from 1984 for instance. This is because their time was exclusively non-digitalized. Although content creation technically might be foreign to their time, content was still created for the available media at the time.
If a Nigerian from the 80’s would find it tricky understanding digital content creation, it would be even trickier comprehending software development.
Again, as with the alien concept of the internet, the reason for this lack of understanding is clear. How exactly can one make a profession from just building applications and websites they’d wonder.
However, this possible confusing from our ancestors does not change the fact that modern individuals make a living from software engineering and other related fields.
You may not know this, but texting is a pretty modern skill. Before the invention of the cell phones, the only way to communicate was through Land Line telephones, mails, radios or telegraphs. The invention and popularity of cell phones created the need for its own unique form of short-hand communication.
This short-hand texting would be coined to type faster and convey messages expending shorter time and energy. More recently, the use of cell phones are so popular in Nigeria that even the access of kids to these electronic devices is increasing.
After the popularity of textos (short-hand texting forms), emojis became popular. Internet users can comfortably convey messages using emoticon tools (emojis) available and varying according to app or website.
Despite the availability of art and letter forms amongst our ancestors, they’d definitely be left lost figuring out what this emoji means: 😇
Before the popularity of the internet, every form of marketing was carried out offline. The opposite is the case in more modern times. Companies, organizations, entrepreneurs and even freelancers, have trusted the internet to showcase their products and services.
Despite this need to market, these businesses are unable to carry out these advertising themselves. The services of a Digital Marketer is consequently required. This need puts Digital Marketers as a top demand from businesses.
The marketing population of our ancestors may grasp this concept a lot better if they had the availability of the internet in their time.
