You were just telling your guys last week how much you love your girlfriend so much it hurts.
They oohed, ahed and maybe even made fun of your lover boy fever but it’s okay because you’re so deeply in love.
Things seemed to be going on fine with bae and you. In your mind, you had planned how you’d take her out to see Crazy Rich Asians once your office paid your monthly salary. And maybe, you thought to yourself, you’d get her that dress she has been disturbing you about for months.
That is after you settled your debts and gave Emeka your housemate, your cut of the month’s PHCN and water bills.
Life would get better you told yourself and maybe your next girlfriend would even enjoy more than Funke your present one because guys would have made more bar.
Then as if the angels of love, Cupid senior and junior are at work, your phone beeps and being in thoughts for so long, you dive and pick up your phone.
Alas, your heart was right. It’s a WhatsApp message from bae. Smiling sheepishly like the proverbial goat about to be taken to the slaughter, you swipe your phone screen to see bae’s messages.
Opening the messages, you stop short. Your heart begins beating rigorously like the drums of the Atilogu band.
Bae’s messages read:
Mortified and dazed, you catch your breath as you fall into the closest chair.
How? How could this be happening to you you wonder.
Why the hell is your girlfriend getting married to an older guy you wonder still.
It really is incredible how younger women are attracted to older men. Think about it: a good number of your secondary and University female classmates are more likely to end up with an older man.
And honestly, this state of things shouldn’t be shocking because growing up with females has been preparing you for this moment. More than half of your female secondary school classmates must have dated boys from higher grades or classes right?
In the theory of the female attraction to older men, The Guardian explains:
”scientists argued instead that the Woody Allens, André Previns, and Michael Douglases of the world make ladies flush simply because they are still around to look attractive. Their senior years display how strong are their genes.
In other words, in our evolutionary past, when people generally pegged it in their twenties, the fact that a man made it to his sixties indicated he must have something very powerful going for him genetically, a trend that still produces biological effects.’‘
This means that there might be a scientific explaining this crazy reality. But besides this possible scientific explanation, here are three reasons your girlfriend might be ditching you to marry an older man:
Forget the modern female talks on financial independence and professional awesomeness, the average Nigerian female is looking out for security in her relationships and this need gets stronger as she gets older.
Being with an average younger guy closer to her age (or age-mate) may be all fun and games until she realizes she needs to settle.
Honestly, if you’re a guy who has gone through this sort of dejection, it’s no good beating yourself up.
See ehn, some Nigerian ladies truly do put a guy’s love and care above the amount of security he can offer her.
As much as a man may like or love a woman, it gets tricky understanding what his partner truly wants. This type of lack in care or love may lead a female dumping a guy for another.
and don’t get me wrong, lack of love and care is a reality for both genders. It is not optional caring and loving someone you’re in a relationship with. People want to know that their partners will care for them in the long run or at least try.
Despite how much you may want to beat yourself up over a breakup, not everything is your fault. Or your ex-girlfriend’s. Sometimes, pressure from family, friends and society, push Nigerian females into hurried marriages.
There are far more serious and grave reasons why a partner may be leaving you to get married to another. But that is another article for another day.
Remember that it is important to be appreciative of people in our lives and give in your best in any relationship you’re involved in. If it doesn’t work out, it is also best to accept and feel the pain and move on.
